If you’re having a Halloween party tonight—or even if you’re just chilling out with your family and handing out candy—there’s no greater game to play than Scare the Trick-or-Treaters!

You don’t have to be super scary about it, of course; there’s no need to make babies cry. Making daddies cry, of course, is a goal. You can, however, make little ghoulies and goblins squeal with delight and make it a Halloween to remember. Here are 10 ways to scare your trick-or-treaters this year.

10. Dress Up

This is the one of the easiest ways to scare your guests tonight. One year I scared kids just by painting a spider web over my face (it was a cool web, I must admit). A great way to do this is to wear a mask, that way you can take it off if it’s really bothering the littlest kids.

9. Talk in a Weird Monster Language

If you have a voice distorter, even better! Most kids don’t expect some monster growling, “You want some candy? What if I want to crunch your bones for my bread!”

8. Say, “Boo!”

Leave the front door open and hide behind it. When trick-or-treaters come to the door, jump out with the candy. (Don’t throw the candy at the kids.)

7. Design Your Own Haunted House

Make children work for their candy by entering your haunted house filled with brains (cold cooked spaghetti noodles), eyeballs (peeled grapes), and blood (fruit punch) to drink! Bonus points if you stick your head on a plate through a table like Jackie did one year on Roseanne.

6. Play a Spooky CD

Instead of traditional Halloween songs, play really creepy noises if you can get a hold of one of those tapes—like doors creaking, rats squeaking, etc. Better yet, record people screaming and play it on a loop.

5. Do the Creep Dance from “Thriller”

Choreograph a zombie dance with your friends, put on some grubby clothes and fake blood, and dance in the yard.

4. Pretend to Kill Someone

Dress like a mad scientist butchering a dummy. If you have too many little kids around, this might not be appropriate—but if it’s an older crowd, go for it. Be sure to laugh maniacally.

3. Chase People with a Chainless Chainsaw

Be sure that there’s no chain in it!

2. “It’s Real!”

There’s no better prank than dressing up as a dummy, sitting still, and then reaching out to scare trick-or-treaters! This is a great way to be able to scare the older kids while just sitting there and avoiding scaring the younger ones. It’s also fun to scare the moms and dads!

1. Do a Double “It’s Real!”

Okay, maybe there’s one better prank—faking out a real dummy AND having someone scare the trick-or-treaters! Set up a fake dummy to give your guests confidence that it’s just a scene—then dress up as one yourself and scare them when they least expect it!
